Honoring Veterans and Service Members on Memorial Day

by Shane Stevens, CEO

DHMS and its companies have been honored to provide mobile and portable dental and health services for our military service members for nearly two decades. As a company, we make it a point to honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice as well as those who continue to serve. We believe in giving back to the community, but the men and women of our military forces, past and present, receive special attention from our corporate responsibility team. Below are some pics from one of the ways our company gives back to them. But for starters, here is a little history of Memorial Day!

Originally known as Decoration Day, the holiday originated in the years following the Civil War which claimed the most lives of any conflict in U.S. history. By the late 1860s, Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers. Memorial Day, as Decoration Day gradually came to be known, originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. But during World War I the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars. For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30th. But in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees; the change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.

DHMS had the honor of sponsoring/attending the 2018 Helicopter Veterans Weekend on April 5-8, 2018. Our goal was to honor and support wounded veterans at the famous Circle Bar and Pitchfork Ranch in Truscott, Texas. For more info or videos, check out www.sempergratus.org.

Here are some pictures of the heroes enjoying themselves participating in the activities.

We are all very thankful for our freedom, our democracy and for the opportunity to serve the military that provides these liberties and protection for us all. Have a safe and thankful holiday! - Shane

A Time for Reflection

by Chris Holmes, VP of Military Operations

Memorial Day is a genuine time of reflection. It is a holiday dedicated to the fallen warriors across all branches of our military forces and the many sacrifices they and their families have made. These fallen heroes and their loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice for us, and we shall honor them eternally for that. It is through their sacrifice we can still enjoy the freedoms and the security we have. But many have served in one way or another, and we should never forget to recognize the many civilians who have also paid the ultimate price. When registering your availability to contract on our military events, you’re dedicating your professional dental or medical training to care for our great nation. When you are conducting hearing screenings, dental treatment, or other medical services for our Reserve Forces, the National Guard, and Active duty military, you are in fact serving. Never forget, or believe otherwise.

Always remember how important your role is while delivering the best possible care to our service men and women and first responders. So, on this day, Dental Health Management Solutions would like to thank you and your families for all you’ve done in helping manage the care given to our nation's finest. Your contributions keep our nation strong.

As DHMS and CDE continue to grow this year, the accounting department has been behind the teams every step of the way. Our team is involved in every aspect of all the departments… from "Where is my money?" to "Please help me figure out this expense." We are continuously improving our processes to make sure we offer service to customers, contractors, and co-employees by strengthening our level of communication and upgrading our computer systems. Accounting is fired up and ready for the growth ahead of us this year! Also, we are very excited to have a new member on our accounting team! Aurora Gonzalez is an accounting temp who graduated with a Bachelor in Accounting from The Univ. of Texas in El Paso. She is also proficient in Spanish. We are very excited to have this added skill set on our team!

Organization 101

The sky is blue. The sun is up. It’s time to get started with spring cleaning, and accounting has some tips on how to organize your files in your office. With a new tax year well under way, you may be reassessing your file organization after submitting your 2017 taxes. Here are a few tips from me to you for help with keeping your personal records in order for next year's tax season!

Shred and recycle paper when possible. There's no need to file paper copies of invoices or letters, if your electronic files are organized and you're following proper backup procedures.

Use file folder labels not just letter. Instead of just using the letter ‘ A’, ‘B’ use ‘customer files ‘to make filing easier. Keep your filing systems close and convenient. Keep your current, and next month’s monthly folders in a tray or folder that is within arm’s length to your workspace. Happy organizing!!

Serving Those Who Served

by Grace Lemon

Mobile Dental Solutions has the honor and privilege to serve our geriatric population in nursing homes and assisted living facilities in Austin and the surrounding cities. According to Jeff Anderson in his article, How we celebrate Memorial Day, the US Census Bureau states that nearly one in four senior citizens is a veteran. This means many of the nursing home residents we provide mobile dental services to once served our great Country! While Memorial Day is about honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice, this Memorial Day Mobile Dental Solutions would like to celebrate a gentleman who is still with us. Dennis Deville, who is one of our patients at Park Manor Bee Cave, chose to join the Military after graduating from college in 1970. Dennis, who is originally from San Antonio, served in the US Army. During his time in the military, he was stationed in Alaska, Vietnam, and Cambodia. But of all the places the military took him during this time, his favorite place was Texas! In talking with Dennis, he told me his time in the Army taught him to accept what is out there and do with it what you can. Dennis eventually moved to Corpus Christi with his wife and two kids. He enjoys hunting, playing football, and spending time with his children. Dennis was fortunate enough to find the right guidance and support to find the wonderful nursing home where he currently lives. But it can be difficult for veterans and their families to know what they are eligible for which leads them to not take advantage of all the services they have earned from their service.

In Jeff Anderson’s article, he provided a link to a website called SeniorVet.org, which is a free service that assists seniors in applying for veterans benefits. His blog also provided a link to MemorialDayFoundation.org which is an organization that takes donations to pay for floral arrangements to be placed at war memorials. Mobile Dental Solutions would like to encourage everyone to visit the website MemorialDayFoundation.org this Memorial Day to see how they can make a difference this year. We also want to thank all the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our Country. And we will continue to proudly provide dental care for the veterans who are still with us today.
